The Sensing Gap: 7-7-27 Diagnostic

From my experience, most organizations have a strategy problem. Yours probably does too.
You feel it. Something isn't connecting between what you know about your market, your customers, your community, their needs, and the decisions getting made at the top. The things that end up in your Strategic Plan.
Maybe research lands but nothing changes. The plan looks right but the outcomes don't follow. There's a gap somewhere and you can sense it even if you can't point to it. That's the thing about strategy problems that start with sensing. They're invisible from the inside. You feel the drag long before you can name the cause.
The first step toward fixing anything is diagnosis. Not "we need to be more innovative" or "let's do more research." Actual diagnosis. Where exactly is the constraint? Is it observation? Interpretation? The assumptions nobody's tested? Is it a people problem, a process problem, a governance problem? How acute is it? I've been working on a diagnostic framework to answer those questions. It's called the 7·7·27. Seven capabilities across the full intelligence cycle. Seven infrastructure conditions that enable or block them. Twenty-seven questions built from deep research and decades of doing strategy, organizational transformation, and product work. Every question asks about real behavior, not self-perception. It scores automatically and maps to a maturity model so you can see not just that you have a gap, but where it is and how deep it goes.
Why 27? Trust me, it isn't arbitrary and I have a thing about maths and philosophy. In Plato's Timaeus, the number 27 sits at the base [or limit] of the Lambda, the mathematical structure he used to describe the World Soul. It is 3 cubed—the 'Thrice-Great' number. Plato placed it there because it represents the transition where a line becomes a surface and a surface becomes a solid. It is the number of manifestation: the moment an idea acquires volume.
Most diagnostic tools give you a flat score. A line. Maybe a surface if they're good. The 7·7·27 is built to give you thickness. Seven capabilities along one axis; seven infrastructure conditions along another. Twenty-seven questions distributed across that matrix so you're not just measuring what your organization can do—you're measuring the structural conditions that determine whether it actually does it. That third dimension is where the real diagnosis lives. It's the difference between knowing you have a gap and knowing what's holding it open.
